Protect Your Personal Information Identity Theft
 
It Can Happen to You!
Don’t give out personal information (such as your income or buying habits) to people or businesses that ask for it. For example, don’t include personal information:
*when you enter drawings at stores
*when you fill out warranty cards
*when you respond to surveys on the Internet
  • Check your credit card statements carefully and immediately report unauthorized purchases.
  • Shred all credit card receipts and solicitations, cancelled checks and financial documents before throwing them away.
  • Never provide personal, bank account or credit card information to anyone who contacts you through a telephone or e-mail solicitation.
  • Be wary of fraud schemes that use fictitious IRS forms to steal your identity.
  • Never write down PINs and passwords on your card – memorize them and do not use any part of your Social Security Number, mother’s maiden name, your birth date or address.
  • Guard your Social Security Number. Never carry it in your wallet, write it on checks, or give it to anyone who calls you.
  • Change your driver’s license number to a randomly assigned number rather than your Social Security Number.
  • Be careful at ATMs. “Shoulder surfers” can get your PIN number and gain access to your account.
  • Put passwords on all your accounts.
  • Cancel unused credit cards (cutting them up is not enough).
  • Do not leave paid bills with checks in your mailbox for the mail carrier to pick up.
  • Check your credit report at least twice a year.
  • Call your credit card company if your card has expired and you have not received a new one.
  • Do not use your credit card account number on the Internet unless it is encrypted on a secure site.

Identity Theft Is A Crime
 
Identity theft occurs when someone obtains a person’s identifying information, such as your name, birth date, Social Security Number, or bank account numbers, without permission and with the intent to defraud. Financial institutions have policies, procedures and controls in place to prevent the unauthorized disclosure of customer information. If Your Identity Is Stolen . . . Act Quickly 
  • Immediately contact your bank to close your existing accounts. Open new accounts with a new account number, ATM cards and PIN numbers.
  • File a report with the police immediately and request copies of all police reports.
  • Contact the fraud departments of each of the three major credit bureaus by phone and in writing (see list below).
  • Contact the security departments of any fraudulent accounts that have been opened.
  • Contact all your creditors, by phone and in writing, and inform them of the problem.
  • Cancel all of your credit cards and request that new accounts be established.
  • Contact the Drivers License Issuing department in your area to see if a new license has been requested or issued in your name.

The following is provided by the FDIC, Horizon Financial Bank and the North Dakota Bankers Association.
 
The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) requires each of the nationwide consumer reporting companies to provide you with a free copy of your credit report, at your request, once every 12 months.
 
A credit report contains information on where you live, how you pay your bills and whether you’ve been sued, arrested or filed for bankruptcy. Nationwide consumer reporting companies sell the information in your report to creditors, insurers, employers and other businesses that use it to evaluate your applications for credit insurance employment or renting a home. There are three nationwide consumer reporting companies – Equifax, Experian and Transunion.
 
There is one central website, toll-free telephone number and mailing address for all three companies. Do not call the companies directly. To request a report, do one of the following:

You will need to provide your name, address, Social Security Number and date of birth. If you have moved in the last two years, you may have to provide your previous address. You may also be asked for information only you would know for security purposes.
 
If you request the report online, you should be able to access it immediately. If you order the report by phone or mail, it should be mailed to you within 15 days.
 
If you find errors or inaccuracies on your credit report, both the consumer reporting company and the information provider (under the FCRA) are responsible for correcting the information. Contact the company in writing with your corrections.
